LORADO MAIZE – FOR CRIMPING OR GRAIN
If you are one of the many farmers in the UK looking to grow maize for crimping or grain then you need to ensure that you select the right variety. Whether you are a livestock farmer planning to increase your range of home grown concentrates or an arable farmer with an eye for an alternative spring-sown cash crop the decision you make at sowing time is critical.
Any variety which is sown to satisfy this particular market needs to have rapid dry-down rates and a number of other fundamental attributes including early vigour, excellent standing power and a high yield.
One of the reasons why crimping has been generating more interest is the fact that this option does not demand drying or specialist storage costs and the resultant feed is both convenient and reliable.
A well grown crop of crimped maize should yield between 3.5 – 5.0 tonnes/acre of moist grain with a typical analysis showing a DM of between 65-75, an ME of around 14.5 MJ/kg/DM, a crude protein of 8.5% and a starch level of 60-70 (% DM).
The important factor with Lorado is that the variety was bred specifically as a grain maize so if you select this introduction you are establishing a solid and reliable foundation on which to build the success of your crop.
We have just published a detailed technical information sheet on Lorado so if a crop of crimped or grain maize is something you are planning for 2009 then we strongly suggest that you obtain a copy.
The new leaflet is available as a download from this website - (navigate to the ‘maize’ section using the menu at the top of the page then click on ‘Variety Portfolio’ to access the pdf file.
