NEW RECOMMENDED GRASS AND CLOVER LISTS
The booklet, which runs to 32 pages, obviously concentrates on providing performance characteristics for key grass and clover varieties suitable for use in England and Wales. In addition, the publication provides information on several other relevant topics. For example, it explains why grasses and clovers have such an important role to play on livestock farms and then describes how you should assess the quality of your existing pastures.
The new Recommended List stresses that the introduction of newer varieties can generate a substantial ‘pay-back’. As an example of this the booklet highlights the fact that introducing newer varieties can boost production from permanent pasture over 5 years by £2,000 per hectare – and this is after typical re-seeding costs! There are other financial examples in the booklet which are equally attractive to livestock farmers who are keen to make the most of their grassland.
