Maize Technical Information
For countless dairy farmers in the UK the maize crop has been providing the perfect balance to a grass silage based ration during the winter months. Some farmers are more successful than others in how they squeeze the maximum amount of financial value out of their crops.
There can be a number of reasons for this disparity between what the crop has the potential to deliver and what is actually achieved in practice. One key factor will, of course, be the choice of variety on the farm but the other will relate to the actual husbandry of the crops grown.
Selecting the right variety is vital…but then you need to ensure that the crop is established properly and given every opportunity to generate the maximum possible yield of top quality forage. This can be achieved by close reference to the well-established rules and guidelines associated with maize production.
We have always felt that it is important to provide maize growers with as much technical information as possible and to satisfy this requirement we are able to provide you with access to a number of suitable publications.
The first one which has just become available is the “Maize Management Guide” which was published last autumn by Farm Business magazine and sponsored by several market leading names (including LG). This 28 page, full colour publication, to which the LG brand contributed to, contains a wealth of information on the maize crop. The chapters cover rotations and disease management, establishment techniques and equipment, herbicide options, pre-harvest checklists, harvesting guidelines and the management of maize clamps. To be truly comprehensive a technical guide on maize also needs to address the aspect of feeding and feeding systems. This new booklet also covers this crucial area and the fact that there are several practical ‘case studies’ adds even more value.
You can view this booklet on line or download it for future reference by clicking on the pdf icon at the top of the page. If you would prefer a hard copy of the Maize Management Guide then just send us an e-mail advising your name, address and postcode and we will arrange to send you a copy by first class post.
We are also working on a new version of our own LG Maize Technical Guide. This will be very comprehensive indeed and we expect to be able to supply copies early in the New Year. As soon as it is ready for distribution we will advise maize growers via this website. If you would like to ‘order’ a copy in advance just e-mail us advising your name and full postal address and we will arrange to send you a copy as soon as it has been published.
